Grants are Great When You Can Afford Them

BENSON, Minn.—Minnesota cities are struggling in the down economy and in Benson, finances are so tight that it's decided to send back $167,000 in state transportation money.

City Manager Rob Wolfington says they money is going back to the Minnesota Department of Transportation because the city can't afford its share of matching funds.

Wolfington says the city received the grant in 2006 for a trail extension that would cost about $280,000 to build.

With matching funds and the required engineering costs, the city would be on the hook for nearly $115,000 to build the project.

The City Council could have rolled the project back to 2012, but Wolfington says the city doesn't think it will be in any better financial shape in three years.

The council took the action on Monday.

Sounds eerily familiar.

Well, well, and we NEED a financial director who specializes in GRANTS, why? When the City doesn't have the money to match a grant anyway.

Sounds like Benson has a Council that's paying attention to what's happening in this Country!! Maybe, and that's a BIG MAYBE, our Council can learn from them!!

Let's keep racking up that long term debt! Maybe this article will help people realize that grant money is not FREE! The 3 million in five years (Meyer brought into town) has to be costing us plenty.
Right over the cliff we go....

Dubai is even becoming a ghost town. They recently stopped construction and cancelled a huge concrete contract due to the world economy. Maybe we could send our Mayor and City Administrator over to Dubai and reassure them that everything is going to be okay. There is no need to panic we are continuing as usual. What do you think they would say?

Do you know that if you put a frog in a pot of water on the stove that it will just sit there. As you turn up the heat, and continue to, it will just sit there until it is cooked to death. Are you a frog?

Take a stand and be the cooker not the cooked.

I just heard City of Austin has sent out notices that they will be coming around to homes and businesses and installing Smart thermostats for heating and air conditioning. They will be able to control your heat and air. There are other Smart scanners that they will be coming out for your homes in the near future. They claim it is good for us. More control, more control, more control. We shouldn't be too surprised. We are already used to it in Centerville.

WE HAVE TO ALL START FLOODING THE CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS OR YOU ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO GET YOU HAVE BEEN GETTING! THEY ARE NOT GOING TO LISTEN TO A FEW COMMENTS TO EACH ARTICLE. EVERY COUNCIL MEETING HAS TO HAVE CITIZENS THERE UNTIL THEY ARE SO SICK OF US THAT THEY WILL START TO RETHINK WHAT THEY WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON!

Pretty sad to think "we" elected these people to look out for our "best" interests - and look what we get....

Maybe the city council needs to read this blog and learn from it. Is that possible? Of course I think they would just read and not absorb the contents and learn.

You can go the the council meetings. You can't make comments. That's because they don't want the truth of what they are really doing.

Sounds like the people running Benson have a clue and a conscience.
