Who Has The Right to Decide What One Can Do With Their Private Property?

CENTERVILLE’S DEBT

2004 $5,710,000
2009 $ 11,272,000
A 97% INCREASE IN FIVE YEARS!

What do we have to show for it?

As the current Mayor & Council continue to push forward a downtown redevelopment vision, they have delegated the Planning & Zoning Board to have a Public Hearing in regards to recently rezoned “nonconforming” downtown resident’s property. Even though the City can no longer legally eminent domain private property (exception being roads, bridges, parking lots and trails ) they are currently holding hostage many residents in the downtown area. The nonconforming designation stops the citizens from making improvements to their property which might increase its value as these homes wait to be purchased by a developer. Although The Beard Group has backed out of the Downtown Redevelopment citing the poor economy and there are STILL NO OFFERS on the table to purchase these properties our four members of Council and the Mayor continue to hold these fellow Citizens at their mercy.
In their glorious wisdom, they have voted to punt the nonconforming issue to the Planning and Zoning Board for a decision. Could it be that the Mayor and Council believe this board is more qualified to make that decision or is it a duck and cover move?
This push is exploding our debt, property taxes and we ALL are paying the price!

The Planning & Zoning meetings are no longer televised. Ironically, in the interest of "saving money" the Council voted to discontinue this important public service last year.
UPDATE 03/03/2010
The entire Council (excluding Jeff Paar) sat in on the Public Hearing/Input Meeting last night. City Attorney Kurt Glaser and City Administrator Dallas Larson were also in attendance. More information to follow soon.

Mary Capra Became Mayor in 2004 and hired Dallas Larson as City Administrator early in 2005.
These two along with Jeff Paar, Linda Vickers and Tom Lee are responsible for the outrageous spending.
They are also responsible for NEVER starting a road maintenance fund.
Terry Sweeney did a great job keeping the debt in check two years prior to this reign of terror.

Blondie,
the people you mention above are also responsible for terrorizing the homeowners in the downtown area. They have no right to tell them how they can live in their own homes.
The Government has no business blighting an entire neighborhood for the sake of a development that went belly-up. By zoning this area non-conforming and not allowing home improvements they just guarantee the best low purchase price for future developers.

Why not put these restrictions on the mayor's house and council's homes. I'll bet they would scream bloody murder. They think nothing of imposing hardships on others.

It's about time we get them out of office and clean up this town,

this mirrors so much of what congress and this administration are doing -
THEY KEEP SPENDING
is mayor/council listening? w/ p&z hosting this public hearing party, it would appear NOT

Could it be that Planning and Zoning IS more qualified then these dummies?
More likely they are trying to reflect the heat and vote based on the recommendation of another entity which has no real accountability.
Not the form of leadership I admire nor respect and definitely do not want running Centerville.

Duck and cover is indeed what they are up to.

Sadly, Centerville continues this Metro insanity of more parks and bike trails and figure how to CUT budgets.

Thank you for the flyer and keep challenging the spending.

I hate to say it, but we get the government we deserve. It takes personal sacrifice to be in any form of government. I'm not defending the spending Centerville has done the past few years, but the only way to change things is to get directly involved. I did it when I was unhappy with the direction of the City, and I did what I thought was right "for the City". I understand the frustration, I feel it too, but it seems like it's "easier" to express an opposing opinion than to give up time and serve. Get involved. Go to meetings, join a committee, or run for office. It's time the tax and spenders, in all forms of government, are thrown out and ALL spending is cut, except public safety (police, fire, infrastructure).

I thought the language for America was English. Why then spend money on writing (May peace prevail on earth) in four different languages. Spanish wasn't mentioned. May they want to spend more money and write it in Spanish. How many know how to read Lakota? Are thee German and French speaking people here?

This is like the colored pavement and more than needed lighting.

With the economy as it is, shouldn't we be putting a freeze on spending?

Amen Terry, Amen.

Oh my! We're NOT here to discuss the "green flier" Code for... We're not here to discuss our doubling down on the City debt.
Thank you Mary Capra!

Until the government puts that micro-chip under your skin!
Reminds me of a favorite childhood song.
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down... In the most delightful way.

BEWARE! BE WEARY!
